The increased cost of energy, fuel and raw materials is pushing too much, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, while precision limits purchasing power and slows down consumption. New signals from market representatives.
One double cage around small and very small businesses the new increase in energy costs. On the one hand, electricity, fuels and raw materials are expensive, raising operating costs and limiting the absorption margins of charges. On the other hand, price increases are gradually transferred to the market, while households see their disposable income being pressed and reduced.
The result is one vicious circleThat is, businesses need higher prices to cover their costs, but higher prices make consumption even more difficult. And the less demand, the harder it is for a small business to compensate for the increase in costs through greater turnover.
The hard ones ahead
This image is gaining more weight as the energy market enters a new period of uncertainty. The Southeast European Energy Institute, in his recent study on «Energy Trends in Greece – First Eight months 2026», presented last Thursday 17/9, generally records an upward trend in electricity, gas and oil prices in Europe, while pointing out that fuel prices in Greece remain among the highest in Europe.
Energy becomes an inflationary threat
When presenting the studies of the IENE, the President and Executive Director of the Institute, Stampolis Costis, it linked the current conjuncture to the 1973-1974 energy crisis, but noting that the current situation is more complex, as the pressures manifest simultaneously in oil and gas and are linked to geopolitical and war turbulence.
The concern expressed is that the market may be at the beginning of a second and more difficult phase of the energy crisis, with security of supply coming to the fore.
For Europe, the problem is not only to ensure sufficient quantities of natural gas. The shift towards the LNG has widened alternative sources of supply, but the cost remains high and affects both households and industry. The difference between European prices and those of the USA reflects, at the same time, the competitiveness issue facing the European economy.
The IENE study itself shows that Greece's energy market remains exposed to international changes, while electricity demand in the first eight months of 2026 decreased by 1.85% on an annual basis.
Soaring gas and electricity
Gas is now moving to levels that strongly restore concerns about the cost of electricity. Given the significant participation of natural gas in the Greek electricity mix, a sustained rise in its prices translates into increased pressures and the wholesale electricity market.
Indicative is the image of the Next Day Market. For the Saturday, September 19, the Market Clearance Price was set at EUR 157,97/MWh, reduced by 6% compared to the previous day, but with the 24 hour high reaching EUR 258,50/MWh. The total demand was formed at 336.60 GWh, while in the energy mix RES participated with 49.6% and natural gas with 23.3%.
The image becomes more important if compared to August levels. The average wholesale price recorded since early September has moved higher than the average of the previous month, strengthening the pressure on the professional benefits and, more generally, the cost of operating the market.
It is therefore not just about another electricity bill. Energy crosses the entire cost chain: production, processing, cooling and heating, storage, transport and distribution.
The bill already reaches small businesses
Its latest figures FHME GSEBEE from the semi-annual economic climate survey in small businesses – 1st Semester 2026 they capture with pressure numbers. In the first half of 2026, 73.3% of small and very small businesses said they pay more dearly for electricity compared to 2025, 73.2% that it pays more expensive fuel and 77.5% that it is more burdened for raw materials and supplies.
The average increases recorded in the investigation amounted to 26.03% for electricity, 27.75% for fuels and 24.75% for raw materials and supplies.
This charge is no longer confined solely to the balance sheets of undertakings. 40.3% said it went on to revalue in the first half, compared to just 7.2% which reduced prices. At the same time, almost three out of ten companies, 27.2%, estimate that they will go on to new increases in the second half of the year.
It's the moment when his first link «Cove» He meets the second. The company increases the price because it cannot absorb costs. However, the consumer is asked to pay more with the same or smaller disposable income. And thus restricts consumption, transfers markets or turns to cheaper options.
From increasing costs to reducing turnover
Pressure on demand is now the other major front for small and medium-sized entrepreneurship.
The decline in the economic climate in small and micro-enterprises in the first half of 2026 is reflected in the reduction of the relevant indicator in the 56.5 units from 59.2 Last semester. Same time, 48% of businesses reported further decrease in their liquidity.
The problem, therefore, is not only how much the operation of a business costs but also how much it can sell. For an oven, a restaurant, a laundry, a small store or a laboratory, the adjustment margins are limited. Electricity and fuel costs are rising, suppliers are adjusting their prices, transport costs are rising, and in the end the business is faced with a difficult dilemma. Whether to increase prices and risk customer loss or absorb the cost and see its profit margin shrink.
«The small business cannot be treated like the big business»
This is exactly where the Piraeus Trade Association, requesting the creation of a «energy shield» for small and very small businesses.
The Association, with its announcement, proposes scaled electricity subsidy, with greater protection for small business benefits and first kWh consumption, special additional support for energy-intensive small enterprises, interventions in the cost of professional transport and distribution, a simplified energy upgrade programme for micro-enterprises and a permanent energy protection mechanism to be activated when prices exceed certain levels.
The rationale of the GCR is that the small business does not have the same capacity to absorb an energy shock as a large business. At the same time, it argues that company support also functions as an embankment to accuracy, as it limits the shift of increased costs to final prices.
The president of the Piraeus Trade Association, Theodoris Kapralos, calls, in particular, for the experience of the 2022 interventions to be exploited without repeating themselves, but with a more targeted mechanism for small professional benefits.
The request is typical of the problem facing the market today: not a horizontal subsidy, but a protection net for those undertakings that have less capacity to absorb valuations.
ESA: «Energy costs directly threaten SMEs»
At the same wavelength the president of Athens Chamber of Commerce, Giannis Hatzitheodosiou, which warns of the intensity of the pressures caused by rising energy costs.
In his recent speech he notes that the rise in oil and fuel is carried on to transport costs and, through this, to product and service prices. It thus describes a charge chain starting from the energy resulting in the final price paid by the consumer.
The main question he raises concerns precisely «double cage» market: how can a small enterprise meet higher costs when consumption moves under pressure?
