In frontal collision with the Anthropic music industry is driven, as Sony Music and Warner Music filed a lawsuit against her, accusing her of illegally using thousands of copyright-protected works to develop her models.
The two companies are talking about «one of the biggest and most blatant thefts of intellectual property in history», in a case which is expected to develop into a major judicial battle for the limits of the use of protected content by the artificial intelligence.
The lawsuit was filed at a federal court in Northern California on Friday according to the Axios website and turns not only against Anthropic, but also against her CEO, Dario Amonday, and her co-founder, Benjamin Mann.
«Massive» use of protected content
According to the plaintiffs, Anthropic carried out on a huge scale illegal shots and copies of copyright-protected works in order to train and develop the Claude artificial intelligence tool.
At the heart of the appeal are thousands of music works, for which Sony and Warner claim they were used without permission, calling for compensations of hundreds of thousands of dollars for each project.
The case is of particular importance as it raises a crucial question for the artificial intelligence industry: how far can the use of protected content reach for the education of AI models without the permission of creators and beneficiaries?
Anthropic again on target
This is not the first time Anthropic has faced charges of illegal use of material in order to train its models.
In September 2025, the company agreed to pay $1.5 billion to writers and publishers as part of a copyright violation settlement.
The agreement was then described as the largest relevant settlement in US history. The new case now carries the conflict into the music field.
