In Greece politicians may release pigeons, but for many people around the world the invasion of the likers of the balconies and their courtyards creates problems. Thus it is not surprising that an original and highly effective system of dealing with pigeons is making the internet round, causing a variety of comments to the technology communities.
An apartment owner, tired of the persistent presence of birds preying on his balcony and leaving dirt, decided to take matters into his own hands by recruiting technology.

Instead of classic repellents, such as spikes or plastic crows, cd or anything else designed and assembled an automatic tracking and targeting system, which acts as a peculiar «Defence zone» using image recognition algorithms.
The system is based on a camera that continuously scans the balcony space and feeds data a digital vision software. Once the program recognizes the shape and motion of a pigeon, it instantly commands a mechanism with servo engines, which turns a water launcher towards it. A brief and targeted splash of water is enough to scare the intruder without injuring him, forcing him to immediately move away from the area.
Reactions to technology behind the project
The suspension of this patent in Reddit caused intense discussions among users, with many expressing the desire to obtain something similar for their own spaces or to keep other animals away, such as garden deer.
At the same time, of course, several more specialized users rushed to point out that this application is not a purely productive artificial intelligence (Generative AI). According to them, it is a sophisticated form of computervision and motion detection, which is based on libraries such as OpenCV, a technology used for at least a decade in similar amateur projects with microcontroller Raspberry Pi.
Yet, the usefulness of construction remains indisputable for those who have a similar problem in urban areas, where pigeons have become fully familiar with human presence and are not easily removed. Some even wondered with humor whether birds would eventually be able to develop strategies to avoid the system or whether they would simply continue to return, turning the balcony into a permanent, automated test zone.
