Το πότε ακριβώς θα ξεκινήσει η εφαρμογή του δεν είναι ακόμα γνωστό, καθώς απαιτείται η ολοκλήρωση του απαραίτητου νομοθετικού πλαισίου, η ανάπτυξη των σχετικών ψηφιακών υποδομών και η προσαρμογή των εθνικών συστημάτων των κρατών-μελών στα νέα ευρωπαϊκά πρότυπα.
Σημειώνεται βέβαια πως στην χώρα μας υπάρχει ήδη ένα αντίστοιχο σύστημα, το οποίο είναι φυσικά η εφαρμογή Wallet του gov.gr, η οποία μας επιτρέπει να διατηρούμε ένα αντίστοιχο ψηφιακό πορτοφόλι στο smartphone μας. Αντίθετα, όμως, με την πρόταση που προωθεί τώρα η Ε.Ε., το wallet προορίζεται για χώρα αποκλειστικά εντός συνόρων και δεν έχει πανευρωπαϊκή ισχύ.
