When the entire market looks at the present, he tries to buy the future. In 2024, artificial intelligence is already at the heart of public debate, but for most investors it is still a promise.

Most see a new technological wave, but few believe that the biggest industrial revolution has been evolving before them for decades.

Leopold Aschenbrenner belongs to the second division. But it is not limited to making a bold prediction. He chooses to risk his entire professional course on it.

Within a few months, the young former OpenAI researcher turns into one of Wall Street's most discussed people. The hedge fund he establishes attracts billions of dollars, his reputation is launched and several begin to call him «Nostradamus of AI»His story looks like another Silicon Valley genius narrative.

Only her ending is very different.

The essay that Silicon Valley is reading

Aschenbrenner becomes known thanks to the extensive Situational Awareness essay, a text released from office to office in the largest artificial intelligence companies and Silicon Valley investment funds.

His basic position is clear. The development of AI will not be gradual or linear. Anyone who expects the unquestionable evidence to be invested will already have lost the greatest chance of his generation.

In its assessment, demand for powerful processors, memories, data centers and energy is to be launched at unprecedented levels, creating companies worth trillion dollars.

For many, his predictions sound exaggerated. For others, they are almost prophetic.

From theory to the biggest bet of his life

Instead of contenting himself with the role of analyst, he decides to try in practice what he argues.

It establishes the hedge fund Situational Awareness and invests almost exclusively in companies it considers to be the backbone of the new era. Microchip manufacturers, memory companies, data centers infrastructure, energy businesses and participations in upcoming artificial intelligence companies, such as Anthropic, compose his portfolio.

Bet looks extreme. In fact, it proves impressively successful.

As investment frenzy around the AI peaks, valuations are launched. Nvidia turns into the ultimate symbol of the new era, memory companies record historical rally and Wall Street seeks with fury any business that can be associated with artificial intelligence.

Aschenbrenner's fund is giant at an explosive rate and arrives to manage about $45 billion.

At the age of just 24, he is already considered one of the most successful new fund managers in the world.

The day Wall Street knocks on the door

For more than a year, his strategy seems irresistible. As the shares of artificial intelligence go up, the odds of the fund go off. Aschenbrenner not only invests his clients' money. He borrows additional funds from large investment banks, using leverage to increase his bets even more.

It's a practice common on Wall Street. But when the markets turn abruptly, this same practice turns into a time bomb.

AI shares are starting to fall back. The value of the guarantees given by the fund is reduced and its financiers require additional collateral. It's the great margin calls. This is not just a warning. It is an ultimatum: either you immediately find new funds or you are forced to sell.

Time is no longer measured in days, but in hours.

Citadel buys when others are forced to sell

What follows is more like a rescue operation than an ordinary stock transaction.

The Situational Awareness cannot afford to wait for the market to recover. He must immediately sell huge stock and equity packages, even if prices have subsided significantly.

Then the big ones show up. «opportunity hunters» Wall Street. According to the Wall Street Journal, a significant part of the portfolio is acquired by Citadel of Ken Griffin, who exploits forced liquidity and buys assets with a significant discount. He doesn't buy because he thinks Aschenbrenner was wrong. She buys because she knows that she doesn't have a willing salesman, but a salesman who has no choice.

In Wall Street the best time to buy is when the other one can't not sell. That's exactly what's happening.

THE HAS TO BE THE STORY OF 2026

The prediction didn't betray him. He was betrayed by leverage.

Here lies the great irony. Aschenbrenner does not fall out in his predictions of artificial intelligence. The companies in which he had invested are still considered by many the major winners of the next decade.

The problem is that the market never moves in a straight line. Even the strongest upward trend is accompanied by violent corrections. An investor without a loan can endure them. An overworked investor doesn't.

And so the man who saw the future before most is forced to sell the very investments he still believes in.

Wall Street's most expensive lesson

Leopold Aschenbrenner's story is not ultimately a story about artificial intelligence.

It's a story about the markets. For the thin line that separates confidence from overconfidence. For the temptation of leverage, which in the ascending markets resembles a magic tool and the fallout turns into a trap.

And above all, it is a reminder that in Wall Street the biggest challenge is not to predict the future properly. It's to stay standing until you're justified.
