All Prime Minister's Statement

«The National Statistical Authority has just announced the definitive budget figures for 2025 and these are very encouraging. At the same time, however, I am well aware that difficult international conditions increase the daily weight of the already increased cost of living for our households.

I therefore insist that every collective success should be gradually translated into individual prosperity.

Indeed, the national economy can withstand and do better than expected. However, the stress of the supermarket, the costs of children, the most expensive fuels and the care of the elderly remain, everywhere in Europe and in our country.

So today I announce a relief package aimed at the entire population, as a dividend of progress that the state is returning to society.

This is a surplus resulting from a prudent economic policy, which reduces unnecessary state spending and combats tax evasion, which strengthens growth, supporting income, while reducing taxes and public debt.

Surplus, in fact, greater than we expected, something extremely rare even among the most powerful economies.

That is why our targeted interventions are addressed to many, without ever questioning the budgetary balance. They so raise one more «embankment» in the crisis of the economy, especially for families with children, pensioners, tenants, farmers, businesses, and millions of citizens with dues.

In particular, the following will apply for the following period:

  • Diesel subsidies are extended to the network for 20 minutes and for the month of May. A regulation that obviously relieves businesses and consumers.
  • It is also continuing until August to subsidise fertilizers with 15% of the value of their purchase tariffs. A measure potentially involving 250,000 farmers, as well as legal persons active in the primary sector.
  • Exceptional support is provided to families with children, amounting to EUR 150 for each child. This will be given without any application at the end of June and will be addressed to nearly 1 million households, with over 3 million members, almost 80%, i.e. families with children.
  • At the same time, the support of low-paid, uninsured seniors and disabled people paid every November on a permanent and annual basis increases to EUR 300 net. While its perimeter is expanding, now covering 1.9 million beneficiaries, 85% of pensioners over 65 years of age.
  • Income limits are still increasing in order for one rent per year to be returned to more. Thus, an additional 70,000 households are relieved and a total of over 1 million tenants are based, 86% of the total.

But let me stand separately in our bold initiatives on the private debt. These are decisions that help millions of debtors and at the same time release economic activity. And these are:

In this direction three are the key changes affecting developments:, the seizure of a debtor's bank account can now be lifted if 25% of his debt has been repaid and his other obligations to the tax administration have been settled.

SecondFrom now on, it is also possible to join the extrajudicial mechanism and debts from EUR 5,000 to EUR 10,000, which serves about 300,000 stakeholders.

And third and more importantly, debts that have become due until December 2023 will now be eligible for 72 installments, subject only to repayment or settlement of any new maturity after 2023.

The above will be analysed shortly by the financial staff. Their cost is about half a billion euros. They are added to the measures of the current budget and to the major tax reform already being implemented, also to increase the minimum wage and increase annual salaries for 2026, and of course to the 300 million already allocated as defence of the consequences of the conflict in Iran.

I know that many will claim that the measures are inadequate. Indeed, no state, however strong, can face the consequences of a global economic crisis alone. It is, however, the best we can do without disrupting the economic balance we have so hard conquered.

It is the share of certainty and fairness that Greece conquers within an international environment of insecurity and shares it with its society.

But it is also a message of hope that the labors of Greek women and Greeks bring results and that, despite the difficulties, we can hope».

In 5 social groups returns dividend of surplus

Government sources have noted that with the policy implemented by the Mitsotakis government, from 2019 until today, it has laid strong foundations in the economy which is now on a very good course.

«Today, in an extremely fluid and adverse international context the Greek economy continues to show remarkable strengths and to go better than expected. The overperformance recorded by the Greek economy today allows the government to return a targeted dividend of growth to the population groups most in need.

Thus, the dividend of the surplus announced today is directed at 5 main groups most affected by price increases:

  • Families with children
  • Renters
  • Pensioners
  • Farmers
  • Over-indebted debtors with old debts

Eurostat's current figures indicate that we can provide additional support from that provided for in the 2026 budget, by +800 million euros. The ECU 300 million has already been allocated with the recently announced aid measures and the additional ECU 500 million are being announced today.

«This is a dividend coming through lower taxes, savings on state spending, stable growth, higher revenue and lower public debt. So, together with income tax reduction and minimum wage increase, which has already considerably strengthened the available income since the beginning of the year, the new support package is coming to offer targeted assistance to:

  • 1.87 million pensioners and disabled persons (more than 420,000)
  • over 1 tenants (more than 70,000)
  • 3.3 million parents and children (or 975,000 families)
  • 1.3 million microfiche of outstanding debts
  • 284 000 enterprises and professionals with outstanding debts
  • 250,000 by main occupation farmers
  • all diesel vehicle holders.

Category the criteria are extended; The new measures now cover 85% of pensioners over 65 years of age, 86% of tenants and 80% of families with protected children.
