An unusual and particularly worrying case has reached the United States courts, as a Portland woman filed a lawsuit against Trader Joe’s, claiming to have found in packed orange juice something that looked like a glove edge — and possibly even a human fingertip.
According to the complaint filed on 20 April in Multnomah County, Oregon, the plaintiff, Julie O'Neill, purchased a bottle of biological orange juice of 52 ounces with fibers on 14 June 2025 from a chain store. Five days later, while consuming the product, she realized something unusual in her mouth, which she initially thought was a piece of pulp. As described in the lawsuit, when she took it out of her mouth, she found it to be the tip of a rubber glove. She expresses fear that the object may have contained human tissue, arguing that it might have already swallowed part of it.

The complaint states that immediately after the incident she experienced severe symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and burning sensation in the mouth. On the same day he addressed an emergency care unit, worrying about possible ingestion of foreign or dangerous material. O’Neil argues that the product was defective at the time it left the company’s possession and that the presence of such an object could not be considered acceptable by an average consumer. With her lawsuit she asks for $10,000 compensation, as well as covering court expenses and lawyer fees. At the same time, it is noted that he had previously informed the company in writing, but without any response or compensation.

This case is added to a number of issues relating to food safety and have employed the company in the past. Earlier in 2026, Trader Joe’s had proceeded to recall frozen products due to the possible presence of foreign materials, specific glass, and last year a withdrawal of a cheese product was recorded due to the risk of contamination by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

So far, the company has not made an official statement on this lawsuit. The development of the case is expected with particular interest, as it raises serious questions about quality and safety control procedures in food production and distribution.
