The new system replaces what had been installed in the late 1980s and had been phased out since 2005.
Upgrade reducing transport time
The upgrading of the line to the northern border strengthens the international character of the Greek rail network, providing the possibility of direct route of freight trains from Thriasio to Idomeni and to Europe, without requiring the compulsory bypass until the entrance of Thessaloniki Railway Station before continuing their international route.

Kyranakis: Safety and reliability of rail transport - Restore infrastructure
In a statement, Deputy Transport Minister Constantine Kyranakis said:
«The activation of signalling and telemanagement in the Thessaloniki-Eidemeni department, after twenty years, adds 75 km of modern traffic control and management systems to the national network, enhancing the safety and reliability of rail transport.
The value of the project, however, exceeds this line. With the completion of the works in Thessaly by the end of the summer a modern railway corridor will be created that will allow direct freight from Thriasio to Europe.
Step by step we restore critical infrastructure and restore the Greek railway to the map of European transport, proving in practice that we keep our promises».
