One of these concerns the operation of certain electronic systems during passage through toll stations, but also within tunnels or areas with intense electromagnetic activity. There are few drivers who have found that at certain points GPS temporarily loses its signal, while in some cases malfunctions occur in electronic devices using wireless communication.
The explanation is in the mode of operation of modern vehicles. Most new models feature dozens of electronic control units (ECU), sensors, cameras, radar, Bluetooth communication systems, Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G, but also special short-range communications working with road infrastructure. All of this creates a complex electronic environment, which in some cases can be influenced by external sources of electromagnetic radiation or by metal structures that restrict the reception of a satellite signal.
Why is it happening at the tolls?
Most modern toll stations use wireless communication systems to identify transmitters (e-pass), high resolution cameras to identify signs, traffic sensors and electronic control systems.
During transit, especially when the vehicle moves slowly under metal structures, there may be instant GPS signal loss. This does not mean that there is damage to the car, but that the satellite signal is temporarily interrupted until the vehicle leaves the site.
A similar phenomenon can be seen in large tunnels, underground parking spaces or under bridges of large metal construction.
What is affected
In most cases the driver can see temporary signal loss on GPS, delay in renewing navigation,m small interruptions in online services of infotainment, temporary loss of traffic data or weather.
All of this automatically resets once the connection to satellites or mobile network is restored.
Safety systems not affected
Manufacturers have designed critical security systems to operate independently of GPS quality.
ABS, ESP, automatic emergency braking, lane maintenance assistance and most ADAS are based mainly on cameras, radars, sensors and computers of the car itself and not exclusively on satellite navigation. At the same time, the new generation of connected vehicles is increasingly exploiting V2X technologies (Vehicle-to-Everything), which allow for the exchange of information with other vehicles and road infrastructure, further strengthening road safety.
Upgrading eCall changes data
Europe is already gradually stepping up the eCall system, as many older mobile networks are being withdrawn. The new cars are now equipped with communication units that support newer technologies, so that the automatic emergency call system continues to operate seamlessly in the coming years.
What is currently happening in Greece
In Greece most highways now use electronic toll systems with transmitters (e-pass), while the upgrading of infrastructure with signs recognition cameras and new digital traffic management services is continuing. At the same time, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport extends the use «Smart» monitoring systems, which will be used both for road safety and for the detection of infringements.
There is no need to worry about the average driver. The instantaneous loss of GPS signal near tolls or in large tunnels is considered a normal technical phenomenon and does not indicate vehicle failure. However, if navigation or connectivity services remain out of service for a long time and on an open road, then it is best to check the infotainment system or the telematics unit from an authorized workshop.
