A circular was issued by the Directorate-General for Veterinary Medicine of the Hellenic Ministry of Veterinary Medicine with the restricted zones due to confirmation of outbreaks of sheep and goats in Greece. In particular, the circular states:
We know that from 27 May to 5 June 2026, the National Reference Laboratory for
Blessing of sheep and goats (Department of Molecular Diagnostic, Abundant Fever, Virological, Ricketsian and Exotic Diseases of the Directorate of Veterinary Center of Athens), confirmed seven (7) new outbreaks in sheep and goat holdings.
More detailed:
– An outbreak is located in the Region of Central Macedonia, in the Regional Unit of Serres, in the Municipality of Sintika (ADIS Report No. 2026/00155).
Four outbreaks are identified in the Region of Western Greece as follows:
three outbreaks in the Regional Unit Aetoloakarnania, as follows: two outbreaks in the Municipality of Amphiloxia (ADIS Reports No. 2026/00151 & 00157), one outbreak in the Municipality of Holy Town of Messolonghi (ADIS Report No. 2026/00153)
– a focus on the Regional Unit of Ilia, the Municipality of Pyrgos (ADIS Reports No.20206/00156).
– Two dormitories are located in the Region of Peloponnese, in the Regional Unit of Arcadia as follows: one in the Municipality of Megalopoli (ADIS Report No. 2026/00152), one in the Municipality of Gortynia (ADIS Report No. 2026/00154).
After consulting the competent services of the European Commission, they were incorporated into the Annex to Implementing Decision (EU) 1366/2026 of 12 June 2026 amending Implementing Decision (EU) Council Regulation (EEC) No 2024/2207 on certain emergency measures relating to sheep and goat pox.
In this context, the following zones were defined in the WEU. Evros, Rodopis, Xanthi,
Kavala, Thassos, Drama, Serres, Kilkis, Halkidiki, Pellas, Imathias, Pieria, Kozanis, Larissa, Magnesia, Karditsa, Trikala, Eurytania, Fthiotidas, Evia, Fokida, Aetoloakarnania, Achaia, Ilia, Arcadia, Messenia, Laconia, Argolida, Kefalonia, Prevezas, Arta, Thesprotia, Lefkada, Ithaca and the M.E. Thessaloniki as follows:
1. Protection zone
It includes the areas within a 5km radius around contaminated farming.
