The speed at which the Chinese car industry presents new cars has begun to exceed even the limits that its executives themselves consider viable.
In the first five months of 2026 542 new or significantly renewed models and versions were presented in China, which corresponds to approximately 3.6 new cars every day. This is an unprecedented pace in the modern car industry.
He Zhiqi, Executive Vice President of BYD, was one of the officials who publicly hit the alarm bell. According to the data he claimed, the development of a new car may require more than two years and an investment of $1 billion Wan, i.e. about $140-150 million. Yet, within the current Chinese market environment, trade «flash» a brand new model may not last three months before the next competitor appears with more equipment, larger battery or lower price.
Typical of the situation was what happened on July 16, 2026, the day the Chinese media baptized «Crazy Thursday». Within a few hours eight different car industry presentations were held, with seven new or renewed models appearing almost simultaneously. Among them were found products from Li Auto, XPeng, IM Motors, Wuling, Leapmotor and WEY, from affordable family SUV to more expensive electric and plug-in hybrid models.
Many cars – customers?
The paradox is that this storm of new products does not happen in a market that continues to grow at the old pace.
In July retail sales of passengers to China were limited to approximately 1.46 million cars, recording a 20.9% drop over a year earlier. Sales of new energy vehicles, i.e. mainly electric and plug-in hybrid, reached 951,000 units, also reduced by 3.9% annually.
But there is one important detail: despite the fall in total sales, new energy cars won in July a 65.1% share record in the Chinese market.
So the problem is not that China is returning massively to the petrol engines. On the contrary. The problem is that the overall market shows signs of saturation, while at the same time dozens of manufacturers claim the same buyers with hundreds of similar products.
The consequences begin to be reflected in the balance sheets. According to the data, BYD recorded a sales drop of about 16% in the first half, the first corresponding decline after six years. Seres warned of damage, while Great Wall Motor's net profits were expected to retreat about 60%.
Even XPeng, despite increasing traditions, announced on 24 August damages of 1.34 billion Wan in the second quarter, as investments in new models, technologies and artificial intelligence push its profitability.
The situation now leads to greater attention on the quality of new cars. China progresses to stricter endurance tests for NEVs, increasing the mandatory road test to 30,000 km, at the same level as conventional cars. Change is of particular importance at a time when the cycles of evolution and renewal of models have been compressed as never before.
The development model «I bring something new before the competitor can.» So he starts showing his limits. And there is another more serious issue. The more models and variants are created, the more complexity increases in spare parts, technical support, software, workshop training and reseller value management. For larger groups with a huge productive basis the problem can be manageable. For smaller Chinese brands, however, the continued need to finance new products can develop into a real survival test.
Nio's CEO, William Li, has also pointed out that the time when the Chinese market could continuously develop through the acquisition of the first car by millions of families is nearing its end. Now, a large proportion of households already have a car and the market gradually passes into a time of replacement and renewal of the existing fleet.
Europe becomes the big relief valve and together Greece
China's huge production potential must be channelled somewhere. And this largely explains the unprecedented aggression with which Chinese companies are now expanding off the border.
Europe is one of the main objectives. In 2025 more than 1 million Chinese-made cars were introduced into the European Union, while Chinese-produced models already accounted for 7% of all European sales and 20% of the market for pure electrics.
The picture in 2026 changes even faster. According to data from Dataforce published these days, Chinese brands had allocated around 813,000 cars to Europe within the first seven months of the year, already surpassing the entire volume of 2025. Their share now moves close to 10%, having nearly doubled within a year.
BYD, SAIC/MG and Cherry have become the three main protagonists of this expansion. At the same time, companies such as Leapmotor, XPeng, Geely, Omoda and Jaecoo continue to strengthen their presence.
Greece is also a typical example of this trend.
In the first half of 2026 7,452 cars of Chinese origin were registered in our country, accounting for about 8.9% of the Greek market for new passengers, compared with about 6.6% in total of 2025.
MG, Cherry and BYD gathered together over 80% of Chinese sales, with 2,518, 1.966 and 1,589 classifications respectively. At the same time, nearly 20 Chinese brands had already recorded sales in Greece.
At the same time, the latest CEAS bulletin shows that the Greek market remains relatively strong. From January to July 2026 97,261 new passengers were registered, increased by 6% compared to the corresponding last year. Pure electrics reached 6,282 units, recording an increase of 28.8%, while together BEV and PHEV reached 12.505 classifications.
For Chinese companies Greece, despite its small size, remains a market with interest: high sales concentration in SUVs, growth of electric cars and consumers who appear clearly more willing than a few years ago to consider a new brand.
Many of these new models will have the opportunity to see them in person and at the big car fair Auto Athina 2026, to be held in Athens. There they will give it «present» all Chinese car companies represented today in our country, presenting a wide range of new models, technologies and proposals that clearly illustrate how dynamically they claim a share in the Greek market.
The next stage of the Chinese raid will probably not be judged by who will present most cars. It will be judged by who can support these cars for years: with real sales network, spare parts, technical support, proper warranty, software updates and fixed resale value.
And here is perhaps the big change that is coming. The first phase of the Chinese car industry was the impressiveness of technology and low prices. The second was the acquisition of market shares.
The third thing that starts now will be survival. Because 542 new models within five months may prove the incredible speed of the Chinese industry. But they also prove the size of the problem: in a market with a finite number of customers, not everyone can win.
And the next major battle of Chinese manufacturers will not only be fought in China. More and more will be given to car reports, representative networks and European price lists. — and of course Greece.
