The glass holders were roused as "Glassholes". Google then stopped production.
Some million pairs of glasses are on their way
Now, about 13 years later, other manufacturers try again. First of all, Meta CEO Marc Zuckerberg sees one large future in data glasses. Three models have already been released on the market in collaboration with sunglasses manufacturer Ray-Ban.

Several million have now been sold worldwide. Other manufacturers, such as Xiaomi and Huawei, have also developed intelligent glasses. They have not yet reached the mass market. But the clever glass experiment enters the next round, although reservations remain.
The hidden video surveillance
A representative survey in Germany commissioned by SWR shows that video mode causes many concerns. According to the investigation, The large majority of German citizens consider it a social problem that people can be secretly filmed in personal situations And that recordings can be used maliciously.
Glasses use a flashing light to show when a video recording is underway. However, there are already drivers circulating online and showing how to cover the signal so it is no longer visible. Some influencers apparently go "to hunting" equipped in this way to record special women. Of course, there's no way men can be targeted.
Women are exposed online
SWR's research team spoke to people who have already been victims of hidden video surveillance. A woman in bikinis was recorded by a man and once there were secret recordings in Oktoberfest, Munich.
You can no longer feel safe from the cameras anywhere. Records in the sauna are also possible. Such videos also end up on social media, where they are commented on accordingly.
What if the bosses were wearing camera glasses?
But there are other scenarios. Smart glasses that can take pictures and videos could be used in the workplace, for example. Chiefs could wear them and use them to monitor the workforce without them realizing it.

Workers can also record colleagues and denounce them. And even if the camera function is not turned on, there may be a permanent sense of control.
Lack of accurate regulatory framework
Legally speaking, such hidden videos are often found in a gray zone. Unlike recordings, it was always identifiable when someone recorded videos. However, this changes with the new glasses. No one needs to hold their cell phone to film.
So far, however, there are no precise rules for health and safety at work governing the use of smart glasses at work. Even against hidden records in a sauna there are still no precise legal measures.
German government wants to make improvements
German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) has just introduced a law against digital violence. It foresees new criminal offences, including violating privacy through recording images. However, it is doubtful whether the law will cover all the cases described.
Indra Spiecker, head of the seat of the law of digitization at the University of Cologne, has her doubts. It criticizes the fact that hidden records are to be punished in the future if they are done - as the law says - with "clear sexual destination". Very vague, Spiecker believes. Whether, for example, a bikini woman’s video in an outdoor pool counts as such or not is debatable.
Is Meta facing the same fate as Google?
