Meta's CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg purchased a 19th-century Gothic style castle, which overlooks a river in southeastern Ireland, about 200 km from his company's European headquarters in Dublin today, a spokesperson announced.
The American billionaire purchased Stranacally Castle, located in Waterford County (south) from British businessman Michael Allen-Buckley and his wife Giancarla, a member of the Forte family, known for luxury hotels in Britain.
Strancally was built in 1827 for an English politician. It is a stone, three-story tower, overlooking the Blackwater River. It was extensively renovated in 2003, according to a state architectural archive.
The transaction is not included in the Irish State real estate price register. The Irish Times, which first revealed the market, estimated that the value of the property could range between 20 and 30m euros.
A representative of Zuckerberg said that he and his family are «excited that they will continue to care for this historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland».
Meta employs around 1,500 employees in Ireland, where American multinational technology companies have their European headquarters, partly due to the country's favourable tax regime.
