In the light of a common European road safety framework, Brussels is promoting the introduction of a new European driving licence that must be standardised and valid in all EU Member States.

With digital transformation having a direct impact on modern society, Europe is expected to welcome the compulsory implementation of digital driving licence by 2030, achieving substantial uniformity in road traffic regulations.

Key to implementing this new driving licence is EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet), a digital wallet which, in addition to driving licences, will allow users to carry their passport, national identity and various other documents.

The original plan was to completely abolish physical forms and select a digital document that could be transferred to a mobile phone or any other similar device.

However, this will probably not happen as some EU Member States have expressed their opposition to a single digital format, which has allowed temporary exceptions for certain countries. The driving licence will be one of the first available documents to make their debut in the application and although at national level we already have digital driving licence in Gov Wallet, this document will be completely different.
