The European Public Prosecutor's Office forwarded to the Supreme Court a second brief on the OPEKEPE scandal, calling for the waiver of immunity of eleven current MPs, a former minister and a Deputy Minister for Rural Development. The request concerns acts allegedly committed in 2021 concerning an organised agricultural fund fraud plan. Five former Members are also under investigation. The investigation focuses on charges of incitement to a breach of trust, computer fraud and false confirmation. Government spokesman Paul Marinakis said the development is serious and the transmission of the case to Parliament is expected for an assessment of each case.
Analyticalally:
Second case-file came to our country about the OPEKEPE scandal by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), which calls for the waiver of immunity of a former minister and a Deputy Minister for AAT but also eleven current Members.
The request to lift immunity concerns acts allegedly committed in 2021. Five more MPs are under investigation.
The case-file formed by the European Public Prosecutor's Office, concerning the participation of political persons, is forwarded to the Supreme Court in the direction of the Hellenic Parliament, in order to discuss the lifting of immunity of 11 MPs, so that they are criminally controlled for their possible participation in the scandal of illegal agricultural subsidies.
After all this, the case of illegal aid by OPEKEPE takes a new more serious turn at political and judicial level.
«The European Public Prosecutor's Office's communication today recommends a serious development», said the government representative, Paul Marinakis, and added: «We await the transmission of the case to the Hellenic Parliament in order to assess each case separately».
On 31 March 2026, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced:
In accordance with the procedures laid down in the Rules of Procedure for the European Public Prosecutor's Office and Greek national legislation, the European Attorney General asked the House of Greeks for immunity to be lifted by 11 active Members in an investigation into a alleged organised scheme of fraud involving agricultural funds. Five former Members are also under investigation.
At the same time, the European Public Prosecutor (EPPO) in Athens (Greece) referred to the Hellenic Parliament information on alleged involvement of a former Minister and a Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Food.
As has already been mentioned, the European Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting several investigations into a alleged organised fraud plan involving civil servants of the Greek Organization for Payments and Control of Community Guidance and Guarantee Assistance (OCEPE).
Today's request to lift immunity concerns acts allegedly committed in 2021.
In order for the EPPO to be able to proceed with this investigation and to establish the facts, while seeking incriminating and exculpatory evidence, the European Prosecutor-General has requested today, in accordance with Article 29 of the Rules of Procedure of the European Public Prosecutor, the waiver of immunity of 11 current Members of Parliament.
The investigation concerns alleged felonies and misdemeanors against the EU's financial interests, i.e. incitement to a breach of trust, computer fraud and false confirmation in order to obtain illegal benefits for third parties.
In addition, information on possible involvement in the fraud plan of a former Minister for Rural Development and Food and his Deputy was disclosed in the performance of their duties. However, Article 86 of the Greek Constitution states that, if evidence concerning offences which may have been committed by Ministers in the performance of their duties occurs during the course of an investigation, even if they then leave their post, these should be transmitted directly to the Parliament. This makes it impossible to fully carry out the tasks of the European Prosecutor's Office and forces it to break up its current investigation into the possible criminal liability of members of the Greek government.
At present, no further details will be made public in order not to jeopardise the outcome of the current procedure.
All persons involved are considered innocent until proven guilty before the competent Greek courts.
The EPPO is the independent prosecutor of the European Union. She is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and referring to the justice of crimes against the EU's financial interests.
PASOK: «A one-way street for Mitsotaki the expulsion of Ministers and Deputy Ministers from the government scheme»
Press release PASOK-Movement Change reads:
Journalistial information broadcasts on the content of the new case-file transmitted to the House on the OPEKEPE scandal that 2 acting Ministers, 2 acting Deputy Ministers, a series of MPs and the Secretary of the New Republic are included.
As long as they are confirmed, it is a one-way street for Mr Mitsotakis to be expelled from the government.
Every attempt to set off is falling apart. The OPEKEPE scandal has wide-ranging signing of the New Republic.
Every scandal and case-file is a photograph of decline and corruption, in which the New Democracy government has sunk the place.
SYRIZA-PS: OPEKEPE! No, it's not a primary joke – it's a government corruption scandal Mitsotakis
Communication from the SYRIZA-PS Press Office reads:
The second case-file on the OPEKEPE scandal, transmitted to the Supreme Court by the European Public Prosecutor's Office, recommends another sound rapping to the Mitsotakis government and reveals, now without room for misinterpretation, the range and depth of one «blue» a mechanism for the dismantling of European resources. Every week and a new scandal, every week and a case, every week and a page of shame for the Mitsotakis government.
References to acting MPs, former ministers and deputy ministers leave no room for evasion and misinterpretation.
The «blue» OPEKEPE scandal is not a «timeless pathogen»As the government attempted to present it. It's the proof of a «parastates» which operated on terms of customer exploitation and circumvention of any concept of legality, transparency and accountability, as revealed in the House of Inquiry and covered by the ND.
The country can't stand any more scandals with the seal of power. He can't take another cover-up. The scandal government must leave with elections... today! Mr. Mitsotakis can't stand a day! None of the petitioners spoke for so long, in case he was hiding, in case he got away. Even today they remain speechless and hidden as they did in the wiretap scandal.
Syriza – PS requires:
- The immediate and complete investigation of the case without any shadow or interference whatsoever
- The lifting of immunity of all Members involved, without delay and pretexts
- The launching of a substantial and not pretentious parliamentary process, which will not repeat the fiasco of the previous outcome.
We will not tolerate any new parliamentary coup in Parliament by Mr Mitsotakis who will suspend an investigation into his government's criminal responsibilities. Greece deserves better. And this progressive change is the responsibility and demand of society.
