The Freedom Curtalis
The Greek market has been moving carefully over the past few years, gathering forces and defenses, with the constant aim of recording new high-years and with the investment interest continuing, without however being disrupted by geopolitical developments, which maintain a high degree of uncertainty, constantly altering the possibilities between positive and negative scenarios.
However, the completion of the first quarter's publication of results was supportive, offering new material to be evaluated and billed by investors. At the same time, strong mobility on the corporate front maintains the investment interest in the Greek market, with several events expected within the month, such as the entry of Attica Stores and ADMIE's ADMIE's ADMIE ADMIE ADMIE.
Very positive was the message given by Morgan Stanley, which many investors hear, given her large clientele. The investment bank, which maintains its positive stance on Greece, upgraded the Greek market to fourth place (from fifth before) in terms of attractiveness between emerging markets in the region of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As he noted, the Greek market will be among those that will be overcompensated when the geopolitical situation deescalates. Her main scenario is that the Straits of Hormuz will open before the end of summer and within the next two months.
Positive developments and strong interest
Despite the pressures that have occurred since the beginning of the month, the Greek stock market continues to feed on positive developments, as Dimitris Tzanas, a management consultant in the Stock Exchange Circle, notes.
In these the analyst places GDP in the first quarter, which includes a month of war in the Middle East, which recorded a performance of 2% as it was assisted by +12.1% of gross investment due to actions funded by the Recovery Fund. Houses such as Jefferies and Wood estimate in their basic scenario that growth in Greece is likely to be maintained at 2% and the next quarters, while the performance with +11.3% of Greek exports in the first four months of the year is remarkable. On the positive side, the analyst and the expected share capital increase of IPTO, which is expected to attract international capital again and will make high coverage.
The interest of investors in Greek assets was clearly reflected in the exits to the markets carried out last week by the Greek State, Optima Bank and Motor Oil.
The reissue of the 10-year bond to which the Greek State proceeded had an impressive demand with a total of 287 investors offering over 36 billion euros for the title.
Optima bank successfully completed the issue of a Category 1 (Additional Tier 1 – AT1) bond by attracting extremely strong interest, with a total demand of more than EUR 2.2 billion, leading to overcovering by 11 times, the largest recorded in a Greek bond issue in euro, in publication € AT1 Greek publisher and published € AT1 in Europe since the beginning of the year.
The issuance of a five-year bond by Motor Oil also raised considerable demand, with offers approaching EUR 2 billion, at the time when the listed one asked for EUR 400 million.
This proves that the Greek market has returned to normality and can follow international trends. Many companies and governments have been on the market lately, and Greece could not be missing.
In fact, demand for government bonds is strong at this time, as there is considerable liquidity. European governments rushed to "lock" lower yields to meet their increased financial needs due to the increase in ECB interest rates last week and the possibility of further increases. At international level, however, there is strong mobility, with governments having raised over EUR 430 billion this year, which is a record level. And the Fed is estimated to move towards stricter monetary policy later in the year.
"Governments take advantage of the opportunity to cover expiring debt and finance increased spending, as long as markets remain receptive. They take advantage of the window of opportunity as long as markets remain healthy and willing to absorb new versions," notes Jonathan Owen, a portfolio manager of TwentyFour Asset Management.
New story for banks thanks to the ECB
At the heart of Euronext Athens and key European markets is the progress of monetary policy, with the European Central Bank being one of the first in the world to increase interest rates after a year of unchanged stance. The last time he had increased interest rates was in September 2023 and in the historic high 4%. Then and by June 2025 the ECB moved into a cycle of monetary policy relaxation, reducing interest rates gradually to 2%.
The ECB's interest rate increase cycle was a completely continental wind for Greek banks at the time creating a new story for the industry, that of interest income increases (NII), which led to a significant increase in their profitability and placed them on the radar of international investors. Interest rebates were subsequently considered a challenge for their balance sheets, although they managed to continue to make strong profitability.
Now the NII story returns after the ECB's interest rate increase, as, according to analysts, this development favours Greek banks because they are particularly sensitive to interest rate changes.
As Beta Securities notes, the increase in ECB interest rates is purely positive for all four Greek banks, with the most important being to change the investment account it creates: from concerns about pressure on net interest income (NII) the Greek banks are faced with a scenario of a gradual recovery of the NIIs, with margins of higher growth, as long as interest rate increases continue.
According to Beta's calculations, this first increase in interest rates will add 74m euros to this year's interest income of Eurobank, Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank and National Bank, thus exceeding the existing targets by 86 mb. It is therefore considered certain that bank administrations will proceed with a revision of the NIIguidance this year. Its size will depend on whether there are further interest rate increases this year. However, the market provides for two more after June.
NBG Securities makes calculations for all banks, and for smaller ones, and points out that the benefit to net interest income from the 25 mb increase in ECB interest rates is set at 40m euros for the National Bank and at 40m euros also for Piraeus Bank, 30m euros for Eurobank, 20m euros for Alpha Bank, 15m euros for the Bank of Cyprus and 7.5m euros for each of Optima Bank and CrediaBank.
"Buyers" the international houses
A very positive signal for Euronext Athens is the continuation of the... rain of positive reports on banks.
Jefferies sent the very important message that Greek banks are active in one of the most attractive macroeconomic environments in Europe, which remains strong in these uncertain times. According to the house, the resilience of the Greek economy is a key pillar for the investment case of Greek banks.
Analyzing the "drivers" of the Greek story, the house focuses first on the course of the Greek economy. Greece has continued to grow at a rate higher than the European Union for five years, and this trend continued in the first quarter of 2026. The main levers of growth remain investment and private consumption.
