Rough year in 2025 for Tesla Elon Musk's attitude last year, as well as increasing competition in pure electric cars – mainly from Chinese BYD – affected the company's sales both worldwide and in Greece.

As far as our country is concerned, according to the financial statements published yesterday, sales decreased by EUR 29,5 million compared to the previous year, mainly due to the lower demand for electric vehicles (BEVs) on the Greek market.

Turnover drop 31% in one year

The total turnover was €60.2 million and it is worth noting that this is the second use where sales are declining in the country following a frenzy upturn. Specifically, from the 35.5 sales of 2022 in 2023 more than doubled and reached EUR 87.4 million. Last year they stabilised by showing an imperceptible reduction of EUR 87.17 million to reach a significant 31% drop last year.

The fall had already emerged from the classifications as during last year 1,066 Tesla were sold in our country, reduced by 46.3% compared to the 1,987 released in 2024 on the Greek streets. Tesla's share of the domestic car market declined in 2025 to 0.7% versus 1.4%.

Dethronation by Chinese BYD

The losses recorded by Tesla displaced her from her first position in the sales of purely electric vehicles and restricted her to second place behind BYD. The Chinese company that had already started its counterattack from previous years, recorded strong dynamic and increased sales on the Greek car market, counting 1,825 classifications resulting in overturning the image and finding it at the top in 2025 by a large difference.

In the report accompanying the balance sheet of Tesla Greece, the company admits that the rise of the Chinese car industry was one of the major reasons for reducing its sales. In particular, it states: «the reduced demand is linked to the lack of State incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, as well as to the introduction of the new Model Y, which temporarily affected demand. In addition, the change in competition conditions, by reducing Tesla's market share in favour of BYD, contributed to a decrease in expected sales and a corresponding decrease in stocks».

Bad year worldwide

Last year was a negative year in general for Tesla but Greece moved far above the world average. In particular, it recorded a worldwide sales drop in 2025, delivering a total of 1,636.129 vehicles, equivalent to a 8.5% reduction compared to 2024. As far as European integration is concerned, the fall was 27%.

It is recalled that last year was also marked by vandalism in Tesla's dealerships and cars by Elon Musk's political stance and involvement with the public through Trump government and the leadership he held in the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This resulted in both the «freeze» sales for a long time as well as the vertical fall in the resale prices of second-hand vehicles Tesla.
