The geopolitical ignition in the Persian Gulf in late February 2026 has sparked a wide rearrangement of tourism flows in its pelvis Mediterranean. In this new, liquid landscape, Spain and more broadly Western Mediterranean emerge as the most prominent west «safe shelters», absorbing most of the demand from travellers who avoid Middle East and other neighbouring competitive markets. However, the real news emerging from the analysis of macroeconomic data is the remarkable resilience of Greek tourism. Despite the fact that 2025 was a year of historical record and against the intense uncertainty caused by the war, Greece continues to record extremely positive performance, maintaining strong dynamics both in the first quarter of the year and in strong forecasts for the rest of the season.
The preservation of this positive sign for Greece is reflected in the most emphatic way in its official elements. Bank of Greece for the current account. The country closed in the first quarter of 2026 with a spectacular rise, welcoming 3.4 million travelers, which translates to an increase of 38.3% compared to the corresponding period of 2025. Even more impressive is the course of travel receipts, which were set at 1.67 billion euros, recording an increase of 64.3%. Europe remains the undisputed pillar of this success, with traditional markets showing total confidence in the Greek tourist product. For example, the United Kingdom experienced an increase of 49.3%, France 27.6% and Italy 25%. These performances effectively absorbed the vibrations from the fall of specific markets after the outbreak of the crisis, such as the 8.6% reduction from the US and the almost annihilation of traffic from Israel, with cancellations involving 600,000 scheduled air positions. At the same time, Spain operates as an auxiliary to overall European resistance, recording a continuous rise with 17.5 million international tourists in the first quarter and absorbing the share of American travelers who changed their plans.
Spain is the great winner of the crisis, absorbing most of the tourists who avoid the Middle East and nearby markets.
The argument in favour of the continued dynamics of Greek tourism and the prospects for an excellent year is decisively reinforced by the quality characteristics of European demand. According to his new study INSETE, based on its data GWI TravelGreece emerged as a top destination for European travelers in 2026. On the map of travel intent, our country occupies third place in German and Italian preferences, fourth place for British and French and sixth for Spanish. Of course, Mediterranean competition remains fierce. In the German market, Italy (29.2%) and Spain (28.5%) lead, while in the United Kingdom Greece with 19.9% follows France (20.0%), behind Spain and Italy. Despite the environment of economic uncertainty, consumer habits are completely aligned with the domestic tourist product, as the preference for a holiday near the sea and city break takes place for 5 to 7 days. In addition, the rising trend towards alternative tourism, such as contact with nature and hiking, opens the way for the tourist development of less projected Greek regions.
This huge travel intention tank is expected to be converted into arrivals mainly through the dynamics of last-minute booking. Air planning for Greece remains impressively stable at the high levels of 30 million seats. It may be that the volatile geopolitical conditions have slowed down the pace of the preoccupations – which according to INSETE Tracker υποχώρησε στο -5% μετά τα τέλη Φεβρουαρίου–, ωστόσο η αγορά προσαρμόζεται άμεσα στο «last minute».
