To suspend the construction of the new data centres in two municipalities in the country by 23 October 2026 at the latest, pending their environmental impact assessment, it called on Google Finnish government agency today. These projects, in the cities of Muchos and Kayaani, in the northwestern part of the country, are included in an investment of 13 billion euros announced in Finland, the largest single investment by the American group in Europe in the field of artificial intelligence.
During a visit by the French Agency last week to Muchos, a journalist observed the activity of the excavators around the site.
«He's gone.» the forest
In front of the farm of one of the residents who met the French Agency, the forest located on a plot acquired by Google had already disappeared. However, the Finnish supervisory agency plans to put an end – at least temporarily – to this site.
The supervisory agency requested that they be suspended «all preparatory measures likely to significantly change the environment in the context of data centres projects designed in Mugos and Kayaani».
The agency is conducting an investigation, suspecting that The company Tuike Finland, representing Google, deflated more than 3,000 acres of forest land in Mougos without going ahead in advance with the mandatory environmental impact assessment.
«Possible initiation of forced measures»
If Tuike Finland does not comply with this request, the supervisory authority "considers possible initiation of forced measures".
«We understand the concerns expressed and recognise that, in this case, we did not meet our own high standards», admitted by Sondra Ronander, a Google representative, to a message to the French Agency. «We will study the conclusions of the Finnish agency and follow its recommendations».

Αίτημα πολιτών που απαιτεί αυστηρότερους κανονισμούς για τη χρήση της ενέργειας των κέντρων αυτών όπως και για τις συνέπειές τους στο περιβάλλον, έλαβε περίπου 84.000 υπογραφές.
Το αίτημα αναμένεται να συζητηθεί στο κοινοβούλιο.
