THE Donald Trump launched on Monday an attack on those who react to the creation of artificial intelligence data centres, warning that local communities rejecting them will end up «backward and poor», while offering indirect assistance to competitor China.
Reactions to these facilities, which consume huge quantities of energy, have unexpectedly evolved into a central issue in the face of the mid-term elections in the US. The issue brings Trump into conflict orbit even with party executives himself.
Polls show that the majority of Americans now oppose the construction of such infrastructure, protesting the increase in electricity bills and noise pollution they cause.
«The only reason why local communities in the US would not want Data Centers is if they choose to stay backward and poor», Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
«If they want to advance, get rich, have much lower taxes and jobs everywhere, let the data dominate».
«If we kill the goose that makes the golden eggs, it's just us.», added the American president.
Americans don't want data centers
Republicans are already facing the risk of losing control of Congress in the mid-election, as the war with Iran launches the cost of life, and the wave of reactions for data centers adds a new headache. According to polls, reactions are constantly intensifying.
Fox News' survey in July showed that 70% of respondents disagreed with the creation of artificial intelligence data center in its region, a percentage involving 60% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats.
At the same time, in at least 21 election contests in 18 states, candidates have already shown television advertisements with references to data centers, with the relevant campaigns sharing almost equally in the two major parties.

Δημοσιεύματα στον αμερικανικό Τύπο αφήνουν αιχμές ότι η Κίνα ενδέχεται να υποδαυλίζει τις αντιδράσεις, με επιτροπή του Κογκρέσου να ζητά τη διενέργεια έρευνας.
Ο Τραμπ, που αναμένεται να υποδεχθεί τον Κινέζο πρόεδρο Σι Τζινπίνγκ στον Λευκό Οίκο τον Σεπτέμβριο, δεν επανέλαβε τον ισχυρισμό, τόνισε όμως ότι το Πεκίνο τρίβει τα χέρια του με τις εξελίξεις.
«Η Κίνα δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι πιο ευτυχισμένη με αυτό το κίνημα κατά των Data Centers. Για την ακρίβεια, δεν μπορούν να πιστέψουν ότι συμβαίνει!», ανέφερε.
Την ίδια ώρα, η Κίνα ετοιμάζεται σχεδόν να διπλασιάσει τη χωρητικότητα των δικών της κέντρων δεδομένων μέσα στην επόμενη πενταετία, καθώς ο τεχνολογικός ανταγωνισμός με τις ΗΠΑ στην τεχνητή νοημοσύνη μεγαλώνει.
