More than 160,000 people have already put their name on the waiting list for Slate Auto's first electric model, the startup supported financially by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos.

At the time when most new electric cars remain more expensive than their respective thermals, Slate Auto attempts to enter the market with a more affordable proposal, betting on a two-door electric pick-up with modular design, allowing conversions to five-seat SUV or fastback which will keep the cost of buying low.

Nevertheless, public interest is impressive. According to the company's data, more than 160,000 stakeholders have already made reservationsBy paying a small refund to get priority in deliveries.

Slate had originally presented the project as an affordable electric vehicle with a price below $20,000, however the abolition of the $7,500 federal grant in the US changed the data. Now, the company is limited to stating that the starting price will range between $20,000 and $30,000, with final notices expected on the day the orders start.

Those who have already booked will be asked to pay an unrefundable $300 advance on finalize their order and secure a place in the first batches of production.

The email sent to interested parties states that, in the autumn of this year, those who have advanced the deposit will be able to choose the colour and accessories of the vehicle, choose a funding program, complete the market and then choose how to receive.

The interesting thing is that first deliveries are not expected before mid-2027, with Slate reporting that it will offer customers the opportunity to view the vehicle in person. At present, however, there is no information on exactly how this will be done or at which locations the model will be presented.
