International Airport South Korea's Incheon emerged the world's busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic for the first half of 2026. This is a historical first, partly due to geopolitical turbulence in the Middle East.
World rankings (1 Semester 2026)
According to preliminary data from the International Airport Council (ACI):
- 1st place – Incheon (South Korea): 38.39 million international passengers (+6.3% annually).
- 2nd place – Heathrow (UK): 37.79 million international passengers.
- 3rd place – Changi (Singapore): 34.53 million international passengers.
Factors that led to the first
Geopolitical turbulence: The conflict between the US and Iran affected activity in traditional Middle East air hubs (such as Dubai). This resulted in the channelling of an important part of transit traffic to alternative routes through East Asia.
Increase in Asian tourism: Foreign passengers covered 39.3% of Incheon's total movement in the first half (against 35.2% in 2025), reaching the 44.4%-record rate in the second quarter. This increase is mainly attributed to the large influx of visitors from China and Japan.
Incheon's historical development and infrastructure
As of 2001, when the airport began operating (which is about 48 km west of Seoul), it deletes a steady upward course:
- 2002: 10th place
- 2018: 5th place
- 2024–2025: 3rd place
- 2026 (Six months): 1st place
Upon completion of phase 4 expansion in late 2024, the airport's annual capacity increased to 106 million passengers. It currently serves 101 airlines bound for 183 cities (of which 158 are international destinations).
Deputy president of the management company IIAC, Kim Beom-ho, said this success reflects government support, public trust and staff hard work.

Heathrow (London): He recorded the busiest first half of his history with 40 million total passengers (including domestic flights).
Istanbul: He recently surpassed Heathrow as Europe's busiest airport in total number of passengers. For example, in July, it moved 8,15 million passengers, compared to 7.9 million London Airport.
