Coffee shops from 2027 are required to accept the customer's glass and Mr. Charalambos Theopeptou, former MP of the Ecologists Movement, spoke on the show «Front page» on the subject.
As he said, this is the first phase of the measure, which begins in February 2027. Mr Theopebtou stressed that the main concern concerns hygiene.
Explain that if a client brings a dirty glass there is a risk that germs will be transported to the cafeteria site. He brought as an example practices applied abroad, where the customer places his glass on a special tray with antiseptic fabric and then coffee is transferred from the coffee cup to the reusable customer's glass, without the worker coming into direct contact with it.
He added that the next phase, which comes into effect in 2028, obliges cafes to offer the choice of reused glass.
It also clarified that the regulation is not only limited to coffee, but also concerns food, as it provides for various hygiene regulations. Finally, he stressed that a proper procedure should be applied to ensure that germs are not transported.
