In the developments, challenges and opportunities created by the development of artificial intelligence focused on Konstantinos Daskalakis, Professor of Computer Science at MIT, as part of The Upfront Initiative, held for the 5th year at the Athens Conservatory.
Mr. Daskalakis referred to the frequent misconceptions seen today around artificial intelligence, stressing that the most widespread is the perception that this is a technology that began two years ago.
As he explained, speaking with LiFO Editor Giannis Pantazopoulos, what happened recently was the widespread spread of ChatGPT, which allowed the general public to interact with Generic AI in a direct and easy-to-use manner. However, as he pointed out, artificial intelligence has been used for decades, often without being perceived, as is the case on social media and content platforms, where algorithms determine how information is hierarchical.
«With today's TN, we've got a little bit of intelligence.»
At this point he made special reference to possible «addictive» impact on user behaviour by recalling that in recent years large technology companies have been faced with court decisions in the US about the addiction their platforms can cause.
Referring to Generic AI, he stressed that it is a technology to which we often attribute anthropomorphic characteristics and tend to trust its answers, although its credibility is not absolute.
At the same time, he pointed out that TN is an extremely powerful tool for searching and processing human knowledge, which may in some cases exceed expectations, while in others it fails spectacularly, which requires critical use and constant vigilance. «With today's TN, we've got a little bit of intelligence.» reported features.

On a practical level, he noted that its use is now particularly widespread in programming, where it has significantly increased code-production speed, but also in text processing and knowledge search, such as in bibliographic research.
Artificial intelligence in the workplace
Asked about the changes that artificial intelligence will bring to the world of work and productivity, Mr. Daskalakis stressed that in the near future it will significantly enhance productivity, leading to automated or hybrid decision-making systems, where man and machine will cooperate. He even said that the distinction between human and mechanical decision will be redefined, as many recurring and non-creative tasks will now be done by TN systems.
In this context, he noted that «winners» and «Lost» of the new era will depend on many factors. According to him, large companies that will manage to integrate technology effectively into their processes, as well as those who understand more deeply the human factor and needs of their customers, are expected to come out of this transition.
Instead, more vulnerable jobs will be jobs based on repetitive processes without a creative or human element.
Referring to the skills of the future, he stressed that adaptability, understanding technology, empathy, creativity and critical ability will become increasingly important, while human contact may become even more valuable than today.
At this point he also stressed the importance of redefining our characteristics that make us unique as people adding, how «artificial intelligence can make us more foolish if we surrender to its use for what we create.».
In addition, it stressed the importance of this technology being accessible to all in order to avoid creating inequalities and «two gears» In society and in the economy. As he said, this is a matter of political direction and strategic investment by states and businesses.
