A new wave of precision in fuel scans the domestic market, bringing to the fore strong concerns about households, professional and productive bodies. The rapid increase in international prices of crude oil, combined with ongoing geopolitical turbulence in critical shipping arteries, has already shifted to refinery prices and, consequently, to station pumps (unleaded petrol, traffic oil) throughout the territory.

Advancing consumer wallets while the autumn and winter are approaching, the energy needs are increasing

The average nationwide price of simple unleaded petrol now steadily reaches 2.09 to 2.10 euros per litre, recording a rise of several minutes within just a few weeks. Even more worrying is his course motor oil (diesel), which has exceeded the psychological limit of 2.05 euros per liter. This is a development with wider economic side effects, as diesel is the backbone of freight and supply chain.

International landscape: Brent's rally and the Straits of Hormuz

At the root of this new wave is the launch of international hydrocarbon prices. Brent-type oil negotiates in international markets found in high weeks, flirting openly with the $100 a barrel limit. At the same time, natural gas also records an upward trajectory, exceeding EUR 74 per megawatt hour at the European reference point (TTF).

The nervousness in the markets is mainly fueled by the new escalation of tension in the Middle East and especially in the Straits of Hormuz. The imposition of restrictions and announcements for blockade zones in the region have dramatically reduced daily tanker crossings. While under normal conditions since this passage dozens of crude and liquefied natural gas transport ships are being transported daily, current transits have been limited to a minimum rate, causing asphyxiation to global supply.

The situation is borne by the OPEC+ attitude, which decided to maintain its production levels unchanged, avoiding injecting additional quantities into the market. This option maintains the supply deficit and increases speculative pressures on the future markets.

The radiograph of the Greek market

In Greek territory, wholesale increases passed rapidly into retail. In the refineries, the price of unleaded recorded a significant burden, reaching 1.54 euros per litre (before taxes and profit margins), while in the diesel drive the increase in wholesale was even sharper.

As traditionally happens, geographical inequalities in Greece are intensifying the problem. While in large urban centers, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, prices range below or around 2.08-2.10 euros, in the island country and in remote mountain areas the situation is dramatic. In the Cyclades and Dodecanese, due to increased transport costs and local competitive conditions, unleaded has already exceeded 2.30 euros per litre, disproportionately burdening permanent residents.

Capacity of stocks in fuels and domino revaluations

With regard to fuel adequacy, market players and energy sector officials reassure that there is no direct risk of shortages on the domestic market. The Greek refineries have sufficient supplier dispersion and comply with the planned institutionalized strategic security reserves. Therefore, it is not about availability but about purely economic costs.

The secondary effects of the rise in diesel and liquid fuels are expected to be directly reflected in consumer price indices:

  • Supply chain & food: The increase in transport costs is immediately passed on to the prices of basic goods on the shelf of supermarkets and popular markets.
  • Air and sea transport: The fleeting increase in jet fuel and maritime oil puts strong pressure on tickets, affecting both domestic tourism and transport.
  • Heating costs: As winter approaches, the formation of motion oil and natural gas at these levels suggests an extremely difficult period for heating households.

Prospects and challenges

The current situation once again highlights the vulnerability of European economies towards external energy shock. As long as geopolitical hobs remain active and OPEC+ keeps the production sprain tight, pressure on the pumps will remain intense.

For Greek consumers, «cocktail» high international prices, excise duties and VAT form an environment of prolonged precision, making daily movements and meeting basic energy needs a daily equation for strong solvers.
