METLEN announced today that she successfully carried out "First Fire on Waste" in the Protos Energy Recovery Unit, which she develops for Encyclolis in Cheshire, West England.
The First Launch with Waste Burning is an important milestone, as it confirms that the latest technology unit has now entered the final stages of hot commissioning, notes the company in a relevant announcement and adds: The Protos ERF, when placed in full operation, will be able to process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, producing up to 49.9MW of electricity on a 24-hour basis, a quantity capable of supplying 90,000 households.
The process supports the circular economy, recovering resources from household and commercial waste remaining after recycling, so-called 'residual waste'. In addition to the production of electricity, ash resulting from the combustion process is converted into inert materials for construction, while iron and non-ferrous metals are also recovered for reuse.
METLEN functioned as strategic contractor to the project, taking over the design, supply of equipment and implementation by hand on behalf of Encyclolis, in collaboration with Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH. The project was the first Waste to Energy for the company, with multiple technical challenges and difficulties and the achievement of the milestone of the first combustion was made possible due to the established know-how of METLEN's human resources, despite the time and costological challenges encountered during implementation and to which the company has been extensively mentioned.
The first waste burning in this complex project confirms the advantages of merging former M Renewables and M Power Projects under the single M RESET platform.
In a particularly demanding environment for the European construction and energy infrastructure industry, with material valuations, pressure on supply chains and increased challenges in the implementation of complex projects in recent years, METLEN demonstrates through MRESET that it is one of the few companies that can implement complex thermoelectric projects, with methodologicality and persistence despite adversity, gaining market respect.
Reordering and additions of high quality human resources to M RESET are a guarantee of the continuation of the company's long tradition in the industry. At the same time, before any new thermoelectric project has been undertaken, all those actions will have been preceded by "on time and on budget", as has always been the company's motto.
METLEN maintains large presence on the UK energy market for more than a decade, having completed or currently implemented more than 90 projects, including photovoltaic parks, battery storage systems, network projects, and advanced natural gas units that ensure the stability of the power supply system, a Modern Condenser (Synchronous Condenser) installation, but also two high voltage DC conversion stations (HVDC) in the flagship Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project.
"Achieving first waste burning is a particularly important milestone for Protos ERF, as it progresses towards its commercial operation," said Protos ERF. Director-General of Encyclolis, Mark Burrows-Smith and added: "This unit will play an essential role, providing the area with critical processing capacity for non-recyclable waste, while also producing base electricity to feed households and businesses and recovering resources, including secondary aggregates and metals, for recycling and reuse. Today's development also brings us closer to the implementation of the first carbonized Energy-from-Waste infrastructure in the United Kingdom, with the construction of our pioneering carbon capture unit already in full development next to Protos ERF. Progress achieved reflects the hard work and know-how of our construction teams, contractors and suppliers."
