Spain launches the largest renewal of its wind park, replacing thousands of old wind turbines with stronger ones.
The Spain It opens the way for a major change in the area of green energy, as he plans to replace around 3,000 old wind turbines by 2030 with fewer but far more powerful new generation units.
Existing wind turbines have an average power of approximately 790 kW, while the new turbines that replace them are expected to reach average 5 MW, significantly increasing electricity generation.
Investment 612m euros for upgrading
The Spanish Government has increased to EUR 612 million the financial support programme for the modernisation of renewable energy installations. The funds will be distributed to 173 wind and hydroelectric energy projects, with the original budget increased by 110%. Of these, 81 projects concern the upgrading of wind farms, while the remaining 92 are related to the modernisation of hydroelectric plants.
Through the so-called «powering» (upgrade existing parks), Spain seeks increase energy production without having to build new facilities from the beginning. Overall, the programme provides for the addition of approximately 3.5 GW power from renewable sources, strengthening the stability of the energy system. The areas that will concentrate most of the interventions are Galicia, Castile and Leon and Castile-La Mancha.
The deadline for completing the changes has initially been set for 30 June 2030, with the possibility of extending until 31 December 2030. The aim of the government is to ensure that the acceleration of the energy transition, reducing carbon emissions and exploiting existing infrastructure with more efficient technologies.
