Four speed control cameras installed last year on the Athens–Lamia National Road have been removed from their position, without any official announcement

In May 2025, in the direction current to Lamia, a few kilometers after the toll of Aphids and just before S.E.A. Capandritium, a system of four state-of-the-art speed cameras was launched, mounted on a variable message plate. They were not just photorandars: the devices covered all three lanes of traffic, measured speeds up to 320 km/h with a low margin of error and had brand, model, class and vehicle color identification technology — the exact same characteristics that the Attiki Street cameras bear, where 35 such devices already monitor 15 points of the highway.

Choosing the spot was not random. The National Athens–Lamia serves tens of thousands of vehicles daily, among them the 31,000 residents of the Municipality of Oropos and the workers of the industrial zone Oinophyta–Figure — a combination that fills the axle every morning and every afternoon with heavy traffic.

Today, the sign remains in place, but empty. Support bases exist, cameras don't exist. On the Waze map the point has been removed as active radar — the user community, which is immediately informed and almost real-time, quickly identified that there is no longer anything to record. Google Maps, on the contrary, still displays the point as active, proving once again the lag of static databases against community logic.

The contradiction with the big plan

This disappearance contradicts the ambitious digital surveillance plan implemented by the government. By the end of 2026 more than 2,500 cameras are planned throughout the country — 2,000 fixed AI cameras in Athens, Thessaloniki and Crete, 500 mobiles in public transport vehicles, and 388 specialized red signal cameras exclusively for Attica, under the auspices of the Region. In mid-July the installation of all 388 Attic nodes is expected to be completed.

The first results are already reflected in the numbers. The eight artificial intelligence cameras put into pilot operation in December 2025 at seven points of Attica high risk — Among them Syngros Avenue, Mesogeionia, Kifisia and Vouliagmeni — They only recorded in their first four-day operation nearly 2,000 violations in the descent of Syngros. Within the first month of electronic call confirmation, from late March to late April 2026, the same eight cameras recorded a total of 13,705 violations, while the ten test cameras on OSY buses added another 328. Deputy Minister of Transport described numbers «shockingly», to the extent that the infringement exceeds all assessment.

Seven infringements in «eye» AI

New artificial intelligence cameras are not just photoradars. They automatically recognize seven categories of violations: red signal breach, speed limit overrun, bus traffic, non-use of zone or helmets, mobile use on the move, traffic in the Emergency Strip and illegal stop or parking. They operate 24 hours a day, even in low visibility conditions, zoom automatically into the driver and categorize any violation without human intervention. At the same time, during the recording, they automatically cross-reference the details of the sign with the insurance records, KTEOs, traffic and ring charges.

As of late March 2026, notifications have been sent digitally to the citizen's box via gov.gr or Gov.gr Wallet. If the offender does not pay within ten days and does not submit an objection, the fine shall be automatically confirmed to the ADE. This system, the Single Electronic System for the Recording and Management of KOK infringements, is supervised by the Ministry of Digital Governance.

The new KOK is not kidding

Μέσα σε αυτό το περιβάλλον αυστηρής επέκτασης της ψηφιακής τροχονομίας, η αφαίρεση των τεσσάρων καμερών από έναν κομβικό αυτοκινητόδρομο παραμένει ανεξήγητη. Δεν υπάρχει επίσημη ανακοίνωση, δεν υπάρχει αναφορά σε τεχνικό πρόβλημα, δεν υπάρχει ημερομηνία επανεγκατάστασης. Παραμένει μόνο η άδεια πινακίδα και το ερώτημα: σε μια εποχή που το κράτος επενδύει εκατοντάδες εκατομμύρια για να βλέπει τα πάντα στους ελληνικούς δρόμους, ποιος αποφάσισε ότι αυτό το συγκεκριμένο σημείο δεν χρειάζεται πλέον παρακολούθηση — και γιατί;
