In summer many are looking for ways to keep the house cool and reduce energy consumption in air conditioner.
In this effort, some attempt to put a shadow in the outside air conditioner unit. Experts however point out that the shading of the outside air conditioner unit is not a very effective solution, and the area around it should be kept open for the most part. They also note that the installation of a tent or other cover near the unit is more likely to cause problems.

«Adding shadow to a unit Air conditioning is difficult and often not worth it», tells The Spruce Chris Forbus, owner and chief technician of Choice Air Care.
As he says, theoretically the shadow may keep the unit a little cooler when exposed to the sun, but improvement in performance is limited and is estimated to only 2% to 4%, according to estimates of Dave Lampron Jr., of All Seasons Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing, Inc.
Experts note that a slight increase in performance does not justify such interventions, while those who want better cooling should consider more permanent solutions.

Important air flow around the outside unit of the air conditioner
Most important for the correct operation of each air conditioner is the unobstructed air traffic. If the shading prevents the flow of air or traps the heat expelled by the unit, there is a risk of overheating and premature wear of the condenser.
However, if there is already a natural shadow from a tall tree without preventing ventilation, it can contribute slightly to improving operation.
Accordingly, the use of zip covers is not recommended as long as the air conditioner is in operation as they prevent heat removal and can cause serious damage to the unit. Even in winter, these covers can become a refuge for mice and other rodents, which often cause damage to electrical components. To protect the unit from snow or ice it is recommended to place a sheet of plywood only on its upper side.
Experts point out that proper air conditioning maintenance is more important. They consist of testing by a specialized technician once a year, cleaning the external unit when most pollen retreats and regular cleaning or replacement of air filters.

The rules to follow if you choose to cover your air conditioner
If one chooses to create a shadow around the outer unit, experts recommend keeping a free space of at least 60 to 90 centimetres around its sides and about 1.5 meters above it to ensure proper air circulation.
At the same time, solid tents, tarpaulins or umbrellas should not be placed just above the unit, nor should fences or walls be constructed at a very short distance. Instead, tall shrubs or trees can be planted at a safe distance, or perforated dividers and independent tents offering shade can be used without restricting ventilation.
