At 2010 levels reached 2024 and 2025 employment in the sector of tourism and focus on Central Macedonia, after a period lower «Flight».

Employment in tourism

A sharp drop in employment had occurred during the years of the economic crisis in Greece and in particular in the two years 2013-2014, before it began to follow again the gap since 2015.

However, it took about 10 more years to return to 2010 levels. In the meantime, almost twice as much as in 2010, employment in tourism in the South Aegean and the Ionian Islands, while increasing in most of the other regions of Greece, with the exception of Epirus and Thessaly, which show stagnation or even minor losses.

These data are derived from data from the Observatory «Skillscapes», developed under the coordination of the DataLab Laboratory of Data and Web Science (DataLab) of the AUTH, in collaboration with the Geography Research Laboratory of the University of the Aegean and with the participation of three companies, as explained by the post-doctoral researcher of the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University, George Vlahavas.

The Observatory, for the creation of which some 20 people worked in the two universities, developed within the project «Skillscapes and funded through the National Recovery and Durability Plan «Greece 2.0», with EU-NextGenerationEU resources.

A thousand job ads every week

In fact, the Observatory, in which it is noted «go up» about 1,000 job ads for places in tourism each week; It gives the possibility for a «X-ray» the tourism sector in Greece and not only, since it also records data from European markets and is also available in English, so that they can use it outside Greece.

«Faces overtourism, example to imitation»: Rain the comments to the foreign press on the Special Spatial Framework of Tourism

It can also be a useful tool for policy makers, researchers and tourism professionals, businesses and training agencies, but also for employees themselves: for example, someone who is interested in finding a job in Halkidiki can use it to find out what specialties are in high demand and what skills employers most often demand. It can find that there is increased demand for cooks and cooks, waiters and bartenders, while at the same time specific requirements, such as working in a hospitality group and maintaining a high level of customer service, are emerging.

Based on this information, he can choose more targetedly his next move: to attend a specialized bartending seminar or to choose to be drawn up on health, service and service issues. So, the Watchtower doesn't just show him «where there are jobs»And how he can become more competitive to claim them.

In a similar way, a Centre for Vocational Training (CEC) can use the Observatory to design programmes that meet the real needs of regional labour markets. Through his data, he can see which skills and professions are in increased demand to adapt the content of his programs accordingly. Moreover, thanks to geographical analysis, it can differentiate its targeting by region: different skills can be more critical in an island tourist destination and different in urban or mountain areas.

At the same time, the CEC will be able to monitor trends over time and dynamically update its programmes, ensuring that they remain topical and linked to real professional outlets.

One out of three ads in the South Aegean, second Halkidiki

Navigating on the platform can find interesting elements: one in three work ads concerns the South Aegean region, while among the regional units first is the central sector of Athens with 9.6% of the ads followed by Halkidiki (9.3%), Mykonos (8.2%), Santorini (8.1%) and Heraklion (5.7%).

More demand for cooks

The professions with the highest demand in the country are cooks and cooks (with 14% of the ads), waitresses/s (11.5%) and receptionist (11.2%).

Demand mainly focuses on functional professions and much less on administrative and executive positions. Enterprises mainly seek workers with horizontal skills (soft skills), while demand for digital and «green» or administrative and leadership skills are almost absent from the ads.

But being able to form the above picture in real time was far from easy. The creation of the section of the announcements at the Observatory was the most demanding, technically, challenge for the team.

«The hardest technical part of our job was to clean up the data in the ads. We are talking about thousands of ads, 1,000 a week, and cleaning up data in such a volume can in no way make him human – only tools of Artificial Intelligence, which must be trained for this purpose. Using large language models we were able to find how to categorize ads, identify standard professions and extract skills. With the exception of real-time data, the rest of the Observatory came from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) and the Institute of the Hellenic Tourism Enterprise Association (INSETE)» explains George Vlahawas, and adds that researchers began to «pull» data as early as May 2025, before the project began (in summer of the same year).

No. No. «walk»Other «sprid»

The pilot operation of the Observatory, which is freely accessible to https://skillscapes.csd.auth.gr, started about half a year ago. And his creation was not «walk», complement the researcher, but more «sprid», as the deadlines of the Recovery Fund were very pressing. Why was it created now? The Greek tourism labour market, according to the project's factors, is in a state of intense transformation.
